Arctic Ground Squirrel Skull 1
Arctic Ground Squirrel Skull (Spermophilus parryii): I found this up on the north slope of the Brooks Range in arctic Alaska while filming a sequence on ground squirrels. They are truly extraordinary beasts – hibernating for 8 months of the year and super-cooling their bodies down as low as -4C. No other mammal comes close to this kind of extreme hibernation.
Current research into Arctic Ground Squirrel physiology may help us cure degenerative brain diseases in humans and unlock the possibilities for long distance space travel.
