Horseshoe Crab

Horseshoe Crab

Product Description

Horseshoe crab (family Limulidae), North Carolina: I found this on a mudflat on the Outer Banks, North Carolina, while filming wild horses. They are a truly prehistoric creature, the oldest fossil records dates back to the Ordovician period, 450 million years ago.

Wonderfully alien in structure, even their blood is blue as they use hemocyanin, which contains copper, as the protein which carries oxygen around their bodies.
