Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus): The wildebeest migration across east Africa is one of the great mass movements of animals of earth. It’s an extraordinary spectacle to witness; epic in scale and often gothic in its horror.
The sheer tonnage of meat, bone and tissue that moves across the grasslands is incredible. Sometimes it seems like the wildebeest is just a intermediate – converting grass into protein to be consumed by predators.
If there is an unpleasant way to meet one’s end a wildebeest has probably thought of it first, but they exemplify the sheer tenacity of what it is to be a living creature.
